Mexico supports family reunification: residents and citizens can bring their loved ones. Here is how to get residency for your spouse, children and parents in 2026.
Who you can bring
- Spouse — through marriage to a resident or Mexican citizen.
- Children — as dependents of the parents (dependiente económico).
- Parents — as economic dependents of a resident/citizen.
Residency through family ties
| Situation | What it grants |
|---|---|
| Marriage to a Mexican citizen | Residency, citizenship in 2 years |
| Marriage to a resident | Residency as a dependent |
| Mexican-born child | Permanent residency for parents, faster citizenship |
| Children/parents of a resident | Dependent status |
Documents

- Proof of relationship and the main applicant status.
- Financial proof for dependents (in some cases).
How to apply
- The main applicant gets or already holds residency/citizenship.
- File for family members at a consulate or through INM.
- After entry, complete the canje and get resident cards.
