Moving with children takes more preparation, but Mexico is one of the most family-friendly countries. Here is a complete checklist for 2026.
1. Residency for the whole family
Children get residency as dependents of the parents (dependiente económico), processed together with your residency. If a child is born in Mexico, they are a citizen and parents get an accelerated path to permanent residency.
2. Documents for children (in advance)
- Birth certificate apostilled and translated into Spanish.
- The other parent consent to travel (if applicable).
- Medical and vaccination records.
- Transcripts/grades from the previous school (for enrollment).
3. School
Choose between public (free, in Spanish), private ($1,500–$5,000/year) and international ($6,000–$15,000/year). More in our article on schools for expat children.
4. Healthcare
Set up insurance or IMSS for the family. Private pediatricians are affordable and good. More in our article on healthcare for expats.
5. Home and neighborhood
Choose a neighborhood near the school and with child infrastructure. Safe family locations include Merida, the residential zones of Playa del Carmen and Quintana Roo.
6. Adjustment
- Kids learn Spanish fast, especially in a local school.
- Find expat communities and kids activities in advance.
- The first weeks are an adjustment period — that is normal.
