Entry to Mexico with an EU residence permit - Passport and Visas

Permanent resident status in one of the European Union countries allows you to enter Mexico without the need to purchase a visa. In fact, not only citizens of EU countries, but also residents are allowed visa-free entry into Mexico. Entering Mexico with an EU residence permit has some nuances, which we will now discuss. Mexico entry information provided in this publication applies to citizenseveryonenationalities who have permanent resident status in the EU.

Mexico allows visa-free entry onlypermanent(long-term) residents of EU countries, that is, those who have permanent resident status in any EU country. The same applies to a residence permit in Switzerland. EU residents with other status, including temporary resident, work resident, student, etc., must have a visa to enter Mexico. The so-called «blue card of the European Union» does not open the way to enter Mexico without a visa.

The situation seems a little illogical when entry into Mexico is allowed with a Schengen visa, including type C or D, but with a temporary residence permit in the EU — No. But this is how Mexican immigration law works. Temporary residents of the EU are not entitled to have a Schengen visa, so they are required to prepare a Mexican visa. But, in particular, it is easier for Ukrainians and Russians to obtain a free electronic permit.

EU country resident card — the main document confirming residency status in the European Union, and the only document that can be used to confirm the right to visa-free entry into Mexico.

When entering Mexico, a permanent resident of an EU country must have two documents: a valid passport from the country of his nationality andresident cardEU. Identity cards issued to foreigners in EU countries are not valid outside the EU and do not serve as a basis for entry into Mexico.

Resident cards in all EU countries are unified and look the same. These can be old-style cards, red in the middle and blue around the edges, or new-style, brown-blue, with microtext and an indication of the state in the upper left corner. The latter began to be issued in 2020. The cards are biometric, at the bottom there is the inscription Residence Permit in English. Entry into Mexico is possible using both.

The card type designation must clearly include the wordPermanente(permanent) — This is the main condition for entering Mexico using such a card. On old-style maps there may be a similar inscription in the national language, for example, on Polish maps — Pobyt steely.

Controversial issue — Entry into Mexico using a Family Member card. In addition, it is a confirmation of permanent residence (long-term residence) in the EU. But our readers report cases of refusal to enter Mexico with such a card, although more often, as a rule, visa-free entry into Mexico with such a card does not cause problems. Apparently, it is more important for Mexican immigration officers that the card clearly states Permanente than to delve into the details of the capabilities of such a family member card.

The EU permanent (long-term) resident card hasvalidity period5 years, although the permanent resident status itself is for life. Formally, you are able to enter Mexico even on the last day of the card’s validity. We do not recommend doing this, as the migration officer may not like it, and he will find a reason to deny you entry and issue a permit to stay in the country until the end of the card’s validity period, and not for the maximum period of 180 days.

Polish residence card for entry into Mexico

Life map — This is a Polish resident card. It comes in two types, temporary and permanent. If you have a residence permit card (Karta stałego pobytu), you can use it instead of a visa to enter Mexico; if you have a residence permit card (Karta czasowego pobytu), it does not give the right to enter Mexico.

Here we do not describe entry using the so-called EU Blue Card. It assumes that you already have citizenship in one of the EU countries.

Even if you have permanent resident status in an EU country, but have Ukrainian or Russian citizenship, we suggest that you still obtain an electronic permit to enter Mexico. If there are any questions about the card, you always have the right to present an electronic permit as another basis for entering the country.

In addition, we would like to remind you of all the prospects for visa-free entry into Mexico. A Mexico visa is not needed if you have:

  • citizenship of one of more than 90 countries of the world (the list is long),
  • citizenship of Ukraine, Russia or Turkey (but electronic permission is required),
  • multiple entry visa: USA, Canada, Switzerland, UK, Japan, visa of any Schengen state (with restrictions),
  • permanent residence permit: USA, Canada, Schengen countries, Switzerland, UK, Japan, Chile, Colombia, Peru.

In all other cases, you must have a Mexican visa to enter the country.
