Good news for pet owners: Mexico is one of the most pet-friendly countries for importing dogs and cats. There is no quarantine and the requirements are simple. Here is the move step by step for 2026.
Step 1. Veterinary certificate
Get an international veterinary health certificate issued no earlier than 5–10 days before departure, stating the animal is healthy and treated for parasites. A rabies vaccine is recommended but, since 2020, not formally required for entry — check your airline and departure country rules.
Step 2. Airline rules
- Small animals (usually up to 8 kg with the carrier) travel in the cabin.
- Larger ones go in the heated cargo hold.
- Book your pet spot in advance — spaces are limited.
- The carrier must meet IATA requirements.
Step 3. Arrival and SENASICA inspection
On arrival, SENASICA inspects your pet right at the airport. There is no quarantine: with a properly issued certificate the check takes minutes. They review the animal condition and the carrier.
How many pets you can bring
Up to 3 animals per person without commercial processing. More than that requires an additional procedure and possible fees.

- Do not feed your pet heavily before the flight, and provide water.
