Rules for entering Canada during the quarantine period – Travel Updates

As of October 1, 2022, Canada has lifted all entry restrictions and requirements related to the coronavirus epidemic.

At the moment, Canada allows entry to guest countries. For almost a year and a half, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the state was closed to foreign travelers, and only the promotion of vaccination of the population made it possible to ease entry restrictions.

A number of categories of foreigners had the right to enter Canada even during the period of severe restrictions. These are family members of Canadians, residents and those who have «substantial» purpose of coming to the country. Here we will tell you at what standards ordinary travelers can now visit Canada. The same rules apply when connecting at Canadian airports. There are no transit areas at Canadian airports, and each arrival is treated as entry into the country.

Let us remind you that to visit Canada, citizens of a number of countries around the world must have a Canadian visa. Canada has not yet resumed issuing visas at its consulates; for this reason, only those who already have a Canadian visa or who do not need one can visit the country.

1. Entry is allowed to citizens of all countries of the world, except India and Morocco, and in addition to that, except those arriving from these countries.

2. Only fully vaccinated travelers are allowed entry. Vaccination must be completed at least 14 days before arrival of one of the following vaccines:

  • AstraZeneca (Vaxzevria, COVISHIELD, ChAdOx1-S, AZD1222)
  • Bharat Biotech (Covaxin, BBV152 A, B, C)
  • Janssen/Johnson & Johnson (Ad26.COV2.S)
  • Moderna (Spikevax, mRNA-1273)
  • Pfizer-BioNTech (Comirnaty, tozinameran, BNT162b2)
  • Sinopharm (China) BBIBP-CorV (Vero Cells)
  • Sinovac (CoronaVac, PiCoVacc)

A combination of these vaccines is allowed.

The vaccination certificate must be in English or French in electronic or paper form. If the certificate is in another language, it must be accompanied by a certified translation, stamped by a certified translator or association.

For recovered passengers, you must also be fully vaccinated to enter Canada.

3. All travelers, including vaccinated ones, are required to have:

  • a negative result of a PCR test for coronavirus taken no earlier than 72 hours before boarding a flight to Canada, or
  • a positive test result obtained 14-180 days before arrival.

All types of molecular tests are allowed, including PCR, LAMP, NAAT, NAT, and in addition laboratory rapid tests. Anti-neg tests are not accepted. The test result should be in English or French in electronic or paper form.

Pre-trial testing applies to both foreigners and Canadian citizens and residents, regardless of how long they have been outside the country.

4. A vaccination certificate is not needed:

  • children under 5 years old,
  • children under 12 years of age who enter accompanied by vaccinated parents.

A coronavirus test is not required for all children under 12 years of age.

Children 12-17 years of age must comply with all vaccination and testing criteria applicable to adults.

5. No earlier than 72 hours before boarding the flight, you must fill out a formArriveCAN. On the same page you can find links to mobile applications, where you can also fill out a form. In the form you need to indicate your personal data, the purpose of your trip to Canada, and the countries you have visited in the last 14 days.

You can add data to one profile for up to 8 people, including all family members, children, and also other adults with whom you will live together in Canada.

The application must be accompanied by a vaccination certificate and coronavirus test results. Once completed, you will receive a confirmation which you must present when boarding your flight to Canada. Without this confirmation, as well as a vaccination certificate and coronavirus testing results, the airline will not allow you to board the flight.

6. A vaccination certificate and the availability of tests do not exclude the possibility of undergoing random testing upon arrival. Even if you are departing from Canada on a connecting flight, you may be asked to undergo random testing before departure. There is no payment for random testing and you should not wait for the results to be issued.

7. Permitted airports for arrival in Canada: Calgary (YYC), Edmonton (YEG), Halifax (YHZ), Montreal (YUL), Ottawa (YOW), Quebec (YQB), Toronto Pearson (YYZ), Toronto Billy Bishop (YTZ), Vancouver (YVR), Winnipeg (YWG).

8. After entering Canada, vaccinated tourists do not need to undergo a 14-day quarantine or undergo additional tests within the country.
