Emirates airline remains one of the few major carriers through which it is still possible to build a flight route to Mexico with a transfer in Dubai. This option is used as an alternative to routes via the US or Turkey, where passengers face visa requirements or tighter document controls.
Although the Dubai route — Mexico City formally looks “straight”, but in practice it has an important feature that passengers often learn about after purchasing a ticket. Flights Dubai — Mexico City and back with an intermediate stop in Barcelona. Such a stop in the EU zone for Russians requires a transit or Schengen visa.
For flights Moscow — Dubai — Mexico City can be purchased as a single ticket. The booking system of Emirates and partner airlines processes the flight as one flight departing from Moscow and connecting in Dubai with a single booking number, single baggage and connection protection. In most cases, luggage is checked in immediately to Mexico City, and the transfer in Dubai takes place as a regular transit within the international zone. This means that:
- re-registration in Dubai is not necessary,
- luggage is checked in directly to Mexico City,
- In case of delay of the first segment, the airline is responsible for the transfer.
This scheme is fundamentally different from «independent» combinations of different airlines when a passenger flies on separate tickets.
How to build a route from Russia
A typical flight pattern looks like this:
- Moscow — Dubai, regular Emirates flight,
- transfer at Dubai airport (usually 2-6 hours),
- Dubai — Mexico City, long-haul Emirates flight with technical stop in Barcelona.
The total travel time is more than a day.
In addition, you can get from various Russian cities to Dubai by flights of Russian airlines, say, Aeroflot.
If a passenger bought a single ticket to Mexico on Emirates, the documentation for entry into this country is checked in Moscow.
Transit in Dubai
Dubai International Airport (DXB) — one of the most convenient transit hubs in the world:
- the transit zone does not require passport control with a through ticket,
- you will not need a transit visa for a standard transfer,
- the entire infrastructure is aimed specifically at transfer passengers on long-haul flights.
For passengers traveling to Mexico, this means minimal formalities between segments, since the transfer takes place “within the same airport.”
Dubai segment — Mexico City
Emirates operates regular flights between Dubai and Mexico City. Flights are available daily, including connecting options, providing seamless connections between the Middle East and Mexico.
According to the schedules, flight EK255:
- departs from Dubai (Dubai International Airport, DXB, Terminal 2) daily early morning (3:45),
- makes a technical stop (connection) in Barcelona (duration 2 hours, passengers do not leave the plane),
- arrives in Mexico City (Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juárez, MEX, terminal 1) in the evening local time (16:00).
Travel time — 22:15. In addition, there are options for longer stopovers in Barcelona (15:30 hours and 21:30 hours), when passengers disembark the plane and wait in the transit area of Barcelona Airport or, if they have a Schengen visa, have the opportunity to go into the city.
If the passenger does not have a single ticket, and the route to Mexico begins in Dubai, document verification is carried out here upon check-in for the flight to Mexico City.
On the way back (Mexico City — Dubai, flight EK256) plane:
- departs Mexico City at 19:40,
- makes a technical stop in Barcelona (duration 1:45),
- arrives in Dubai at 00:35 local time.
Travel time — 7 p.m. Options for longer stops in Barcelona are possible — 2:05 or 7:00, exiting the plane to the airport transit area.
Technical stop in Barcelona
Emirates flight between Dubai and Mexico City — long-haul and operates with a landing in Barcelona (Spain). This is not a connection with a transfer to another plane, but a so-called technical stop:
- the plane lands in Barcelona to refuel and change part of the crew,
- the flight number remains the same,
- passengers remain on the plane and continue to fly further on the same board,
- Formally, the route is considered a single DXB-BCN-MEX flight.
The technical stop in Barcelona lasts about 2 hours.
Despite the «technical» nature and that passengers do not leave the plane, Spanish airports apply European control rules to passengers, which creates a visa requirement. And here the main risk arises for citizens of the Russian Federation.
For flights on the route Dubai — When traveling to Mexico City and back with Emirates, citizens of the Russian Federation will need to have a Spanish airport transit visa (type A). Instead of a Spanish transit visa, any Schengen multi-visa, US, Canadian, Japanese and some other visas are suitable. This visa must be checked when boarding a flight in Moscow (if there is a single ticket) or in Dubai.
The mechanism for issuing an airport transit visa type A is very similar to the mechanism for issuing a guest Schengen visa and involves providing the consulate with air tickets and confirmation of financial solvency in the form of a certificate from the place of work and bank statements.
If you have a Schengen visa and are making a long layover getting off the plane, you may be able to gain entry into the EU and get off into the city.
Fleet and flight criteria
Emirates long-haul flights are traditionally operated on wide-body aircraft (Boeing 777 or Airbus A380 based on date and load), designed for multi-hour flights with full service, including:
- several classes of service (Economy, Business, First),
- entertainment system on every seat,
- included luggage and meals throughout the route.
Carry-on baggage
- Economy class:
- 1 piece of hand luggage (up to 7 kg),
- additionally 1 personal item (bag, laptop, briefcase).
- Business Class / First Class:
- 2 pieces of hand luggage,
- plus a personal item.
Checked baggage
- Economy class:
- 2 pieces of luggage up to 23 kg each (based on the tariff).
- Business class:
- 2 pieces up to 32 kg each.
The baggage allowance applies to the entire Emirates itinerary when the ticket is booked as a single booking. If the ticket is «broken» for individual segments (for example, Russia & # 8212; Dubai by another airline), baggage allowances may differ in the first section, this must be clarified separately. Barcelona — This is a technical transit stop, but the baggage rules do not change: baggage is checked in directly to Mexico City.
What is important for passengers to consider?
Although the route is technically convenient, there are still document requirements for transit through Spain and for entry into Mexico. The airline checks them at the check-in stage, since it is responsible for transporting the passenger to the final destination.
This means that when flying from Moscow (on a single ticket) or from Dubai to Mexico they can request:
- Spanish transit visa, Schengen visa or equivalents (for Russians — mandatory),
- return ticket or onward departure route (required),
- accommodation reservation,
- evidence of financial solvency.
Read about the criteria for documents for entering Mexico as a tourist.publications.
In fact, Emirates only checks a return ticket from Mexico, and allows a ticket to a third country and another airline. In general, Emirates has much more lenient criteria for documents for entry into Mexico than Turkish Airlines, although boarding denials also occur.
