Rules for entering Belize during the quarantine period – Travel Updates

As of July 12, 2022, the Government of Belize has lifted all entry criteria related to the coronavirus. The materials presented below are no longer relevant. As before the start of the pandemic, now to enter Belize it is enough to have a visa or a document replacing it.

The Government of Belize has updated the criteria for foreign visitors to enter the country. Belize's borders are open to entry by all means of transport, visa conditions have not changed. Citizens of Ukraine and Russia still need a visa from that country or a visa from the United States, Canada or the Schengen area to enter Belize. Entry is permitted for any purpose of visit to Belize.

As of April 1, 2022, Belize has significantly relaxed entry rules for international travelers. In short, he should have either a vaccination certificate or a coronavirus test, and in addition, insurance. Mandatory reservations for Gold Standard hotels have been cancelled. Belize has also equalized the standards for entry through air, land and sea borders.

Or a vaccination certificate or a test

The Belize Immigration Authority does not specify requirements for a vaccination certificate, but is targeting American tourists. Belize is known to accept the same vaccines as the US, in other words recognized by the WHO, US and EU health authorities. «Sputnik 5» is not among them. The certificate should be in English.

When boarding a flight to Belize, you must present either a vaccination certificate or a negative coronavirus test result. Without the test, you will still be put on the flight, but you will have to take a paid rapid test at Philip Goldson International Airport that costs $50. Only cash is accepted for payment.

The same rule applies for arrivals by land or sea. Belize has begun accepting tests taken in other countries, and you can get a test in advance or get tested at the border for $50.

You have the option of bringing with you a PCR test taken no earlier than 96 hours before arrival, or an antigen test taken no earlier than 48 hours before arrival. The test may be in paper or electronic form in English with a clear indication of the passenger's name and test result.

Children under 5 years of age are exempt from having to take the test.

When tested at a Belize airport, a passenger who tests positive must quarantine for 14 days at their own expense, even if they have an earlier return ticket. If the test is positive when tested at the land border, entry will be denied.

There is no need to fill out a health form upon arrival in Belize.

Insurance

New rule — All foreigners are required to have insurance that covers treatment for coronavirus. And children too. Insurance may be purchased in advance from an international insurance company or upon entry into Belize. Visitors report that it is easier and cheaper to buy local insurance at the border. This insurance costs $18, is valid for 21 days and has a maximum coverage of 50,000 US dollars, including for hospitalization and treatment of coronavirus. It has limitations for different cases and other diseases where the reimbursement will be less. For example, the maximum compensation for an involuntary stay in a hotel (but not AirBnB) — $3000. Just read the insurance criteria before purchasing. Payment at the border — Credit card only, cash is not accepted.

In addition, an insurance policy for visiting Belize for the same $18 can be purchased herewebsite.

Arrival by land

Belize no longer limits the minimum number of days a visitor to the country must stay in the country upon entry by land before leaving. In addition, direct transfer from border to border is allowed. Short-term trips to Guatemala and Mexico for excursions are still limited.

All ground checkpoints are open for exit, but for entry — only through the bridges on the border with Mexico in Chetumal (Santa Elena) or through Benque Viejo Del Carmen on the border with Guatemala.

Land border crossings are open Monday to Friday from 6:00 to 22:00, Saturday and Sunday from 6:00 to 16:00.

Direct bus service between Mexico and Belize has not yet been restored.

In Belize itself

Most quarantine restrictions in the country have been lifted. There are no more curfews. The mandatory wearing of face masks has also been abolished, both outdoors and indoors. However, social distancing is still necessary.

All travel infrastructure enterprises operate without restrictions. Bars, nightclubs and casinos have also resumed operations. Social gatherings, including contact sports, are permitted as long as all participants are vaccinated. Many restaurants continue to require proof of vaccination from patrons.

Vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers now have equal access to all tours and attractions. Movement around the country and the use of transport are not limited.
