A legal marriage in Mexico is registered at the Registro Civil and, once apostilled, is recognized in all Hague Convention countries. Here is the process step by step for 2026.
Step 1. Prepare documents
- Passports and tourist cards (FMM) or resident cards.
- Birth certificates apostilled and translated into Spanish.
- Single-status certificates (proof you are not married) apostilled.
- For divorce/widowhood, the relevant documents apostilled.
- 4 witnesses with valid ID.
Step 2. Medical test
Most states require a blood test, done in Mexico at an accredited lab. Results are ready in 1–2 days.
Step 3. File at the Registro Civil
Submit your documents to the civil registry and set a ceremony date. It can usually be held within a week of filing.
Step 4. Ceremony and certificate
The official ceremony takes place at the Registro Civil or on location (beach, villa) with an authorized official. The marriage certificate (acta de matrimonio) is issued on the ceremony day.
Step 5. Apostille
For your marriage to be recognized at home, the certificate is apostilled (3–7 days), then translated. After that the document is valid worldwide.
Timeline and cost
The whole process, from prep to apostille, usually takes 1–2 weeks on location. The Registro Civil fee is $200–$400 depending on the state, plus the blood test (~$40), translations and apostille. Full ceremony planning is separate.
