The groom flies to his homeland, where he begins the process of family reunification and his wife obtaining a CR1 wife visa. For many such couples, registering a marriage in Mexico — the most optimal option, since neither he nor she has the right to go to the homeland of their other half to get married there.
Immigration to the USA through Mexico.If you are planning to cross the US border from Mexico and want your claims for asylum in the United States to be processed together, you must be a family member and document this with formal documentation. Many couples who plan to enter the United States through Mexico are in a hurry. They fly to Cancun, quickly get married, receive a marriage license, and then head to Tijuana, towards the US border. In the US, they apply for asylum as a family.
Registration of a residence permit in Mexico for a spouse.When one spouse has the requirements to acquire a residence permit in Mexico, the second spouse can also purchase a residence permit. Let's say two people come to Mexico and are not married. One travels to a neighboring country to obtain a work or wealth visa, returns to Mexico and obtains residency status. In order for the second person to receive the same resident status, they must sign. And then the second person is also able to acquire resident status in Mexico.
The same applies to applying for asylum in Mexico. In order for your asylum applications to be considered together, you must be married and have this documented.
No marriage certificate.The previous situation, but the spouses are already married. However, they arrived in Mexico without a marriage certificate. Asking someone to transfer a marriage certificate from their homeland can be time-consuming and expensive, and sometimes even prohibited. For this reason, we advise you to re-register your marriage in Mexico. To register a marriage in Cancun, you only need a passport and do not require a certificate of absence from another marriage.
There is no apostille on the marriage certificate.If you come to Mexico with a marriage certificate that does not have an apostille stamp, consider that you arrived without a certificate. A certificate without an apostille is not valid outside the country of issue. An apostille can be placed on the original certificate or on a notarized copy only in the country where the marriage took place. The consulate will not be of any help here. In this case, either the original certificate or a power of attorney for the execution and apostille of the duplicate should be sent to your home country. Besides this, it is long and expensive. As in the previous case, the solution may be to get married in Mexico.
A marriage can be concluded in a country that has not joined the Hague Convention, and accordingly, an apostille is not issued there. Particularly in Canada. Then it is necessary to confirm the authenticity of the marriage certificate through consular legalization, in other words, first put a stamp in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of such a power, and then another seal in the Mexican consulate in this country. An even more complex situation — There is no Mexican embassy in that country. It is easier to remarry in Mexico and obtain a Mexican marriage certificate. Such a certificate does not need to be apostilled to be submitted to the Mexican government authorities.
A visa to a third country is required.Most often, only residents of Mexico have the right to apply for a US visa, a Schengen visa or a visa of other countries at the consulate of this country in Mexico. But if a spouse applies for a visa — a resident of Mexico, then the second spouse — A non-resident can also obtain a visa for a joint trip. To do this, they need to confirm their relationship by providing the consulate with a marriage certificate.
Gay marriages.Mexico is one of those few countries where it is not only easy to get married, but also registering same-sex marriages is no different from registering a regular marriage. Literally: nothing. The marriage certificate does not indicate who is the husband and who is the wife, there are only partners. Many gay couples, coming to Mexico on vacation, find out about this option at the last minute and decide to get married in Mexico.
Fictitious marriages.Let's not hide, there are such people. But a marriage entered into officially is not formally fictitious. After all, registration is completely real. Only the relationship between spouses is fictitious. Most often, such marriages are concluded with the aim of quickly obtaining a residence permit and in the future — Mexican citizenship. Sometimes — to avoid deportation, because it is impossible to deport the spouse of a Mexican citizen for violating the migration regime.

We came to Mexico on vacation, and the crazy romantic atmosphere inspired us to make a decision: we want to get married right here and right now!
