In every state of Mexico — your requirements for marriage. In this matter, formalities play an important role, especially when one or both newlyweds — foreigners. First of all, we are talking about a list of papers that should be submitted to the local registry office. In the capital of Mexico City (CDMX), the conditions for marriage are not the most difficult, but they are not simple either, and we will now tell you about them. One of the most important requirements — You must have a birth certificate apostilled in your home country. If you do not have the original birth certificate, we can help you register your marriage without it.
1. Select the registry office (office registro civil) where you would like to register your marriage. You can look at the addresses of the registry offices located in Mexico City in thisfile. Registration requirements are the same in all registry offices.
2. Sign up to submit papers. This can be done by or by email. Previously, it was possible to register online, but after the end of the epidemic, the process requires a personal visit to the registry office. If you decide to register by email, please include the name of the procedure (registro de matrimonio) in the subject line and — a request to set a registration date, the full name, address and telephone number of one of the newlyweds. From experience, you will still be asked to come in person to the registry office first, and only then will they set a date for registration.
If you have friends who want to contact the judge directly, you can agree on a registration date with him and avoid an unnecessary visit to the registry office. It is possible to generally register a marriage in the judge’s office, and not in the registry office, and this may be the easiest and fastest option.
3. You will be given a date for registering your marriage, which will be on one of the days within the next 8 days. If you want a closer date, negotiate with the judge or registry office employees. If, on the contrary, you want a registration date later than 8 days, then make an agreement. Please note that before the registration date you need to pay the state fee and take the so-called newlyweds course at the registry office.
4. Prepare the following papers:

5. Take a pre-wedding course for newlyweds. You will be assigned a day before the registration date when you need to complete it. Often you are allowed to take the course on the day of registration. Such courses are conducted by the staff of the registry office. During the lecture, topics such as the rights and responsibilities of spouses, family planning, sexual health, gender equality and the prevention of domestic violence are raised. After completing the course, a certificate is issued, which must also be presented before registering the marriage.
If you do not speak Spanish, officially you must bring a translator with you, unofficially — The registry office workers will turn a blind eye to the fact that you don’t understand anything.
6. Pay the state fee for registering the marriage. The amount of the state fee depends on whether the marriage is registered at the registry office, at home or during non-working hours, or with a judge visiting a specified place. You can find out the current duty rate here.page(select Registro y Celebración de Actas). You can pay online with a bank card or print an invoice and then pay in cash at one of the specified banks, pharmacies or stores “near your home.”
Please note that if you plan to register your marriage outside the registry office, you must notify the registry office and obtain consent at least three working days before the registration date.

9. On the day of the wedding, you should come to the registry office, bring prepared and fill out all additional documentation, show a receipt for payment of the state fee and put your signatures on the marriage certificate.
A judge in Mexico City is not required to give a solemn speech, read an oath, or ask the newlyweds to give verbal consent to marriage. But if you want to make the ceremony more romantic, arrange with the judge and he will give a solemn speech, you can exchange rings and do a short photo session.
10. After registration you will receive a marriage certificate. If you plan to legalize your marriage in your home country, the certificate must be apostilled. How to do this yourself is described in other publications on our website. Quickly apostille a marriage certificate in Mexico City — this is a problem. First, the marriage record must be included in the local civil registry, for which the marriage data is carefully checked. This takes from a week to a month. Only after the entry has appeared in the register is an apostille stamp placed on the certificate.
When, if you need a translation of the certificate for use in Mexican territory, contact an official translator.
The requirements for registering same-sex marriages are exactly the same as for registering ordinary marriages. In Mexico City, such marriages have been registered since 2010.
In addition, you have the right to register a marriage by proxy. This is when one of the newlyweds is physically unable to be present at registration. Then he issues a power of attorney to a third party, who will act on his behalf during registration. The power of attorney is issued by a notary in the presence of two witnesses. If it is a foreign power of attorney, it is apostilled or certified by the consul, and then translated into Spanish by an official translator in Mexico.
