Cost of Living in Mexico in 2026

Cost of Living in Mexico in 2026

One of the biggest questions before moving is how much it costs to live in Mexico. The good news: for a comfort level comparable to Europe or the US, expenses in Mexico are 1.5–2x lower. Below is a real 2026 budget based on our clients' experience in the Riviera Maya.

Monthly budget for one person

ItemCancun / PlayaMerida / smaller cities
1-bedroom rental$500–$900$350–$600
Groceries$250–$400$200–$300
Transport & phone$80–$150$60–$100
Dining & entertainment$200–$350$150–$250
Health insurance$70–$120$70–$120
Total$1,200–$2,000$900–$1,400

Rent

Rent is the biggest expense. In Playa del Carmen a modern studio 10 minutes from the beach runs $500–$700/month, a two-bedroom from $800. Merida is 30–40% cheaper. Long-term rentals usually require a 1–2 month deposit and sometimes a guarantor (aval).

Groceries and food

Local markets and produce (tortillas, fruit, vegetables, chicken) are very affordable; imported goods cost more. Lunch at a local eatery is $4–$7, dinner at a mid-range restaurant $15–$25 per person. A coffee-shop coffee is around $2.50.

Transport

Public transport is cheap: a city bus is about $0.60, a colectivo between towns $1–$3. Uber in Cancun is cheaper and safer than street taxis. Car rental starts at $25/day, gas is around $1.30 per liter.

What affects your budget

  • Location: coastal tourist zones cost more than inland cities.
  • Lifestyle: eating local vs imported products changes the budget a lot.
  • Healthcare: private insurance from $800/year or public IMSS for residents.
  • Neighborhood: beachfront areas cost 30–50% more than residential districts.

How much a family needs

A family of 3–4 with a two- or three-bedroom rental, school for the kids and a car will spend $2,500–$4,000/month in Cancun and $1,800–$2,800 in Merida. That's well below most US and Western European cities for a comparable quality of life.
