How to send a parcel from Mexico - How to live in Mexico

If you need to send a parcel from Mexico to your home country, then the easiest and cheapest way — use the services of Mexpost, or Correos de Mexico — Mexico State Post Office. This is also a reliable option, because packages go missing in Mexico extremely rarely. You need to act in the same way as in any other country in the world: collect the parcel, go to the post office and send it.

What cannot be sent in parcels from Mexico

Mexico Post prohibits the following items from being sent:

  • weapons and drugs,
  • liquids (although we successfully sent perfumes),
  • fresh and perishable products,
  • caustic, flammable, toxic substances,
  • aerosols,
  • oils, fats and lubricants,
  • money,
  • items of historical and artistic value.

You are also required to know the restrictions of the state where you are sending the parcel and take into account its customs regulations. At customs they can open the parcel, and if they find something from the list of restrictions, they will confiscate it or force you to pay a fee.

At the post office in Mexico, they have the right to check the contents of the parcel before sending it, but they won’t be particularly picky. They will ask you to remove only those items that clearly cannot be sent. If you change the packaging or pack items prohibited for shipment so that their contents are not noticeable, then there will be no problems with shipment.

Where are post offices located in Mexico?

There are Mextpost branches in Mexico in every city. But there are very few of them. For example, there is only one branch in Cancun. It is located in the 28th market block (Mercado 28) and looks completely nondescript. But you will immediately recognize it thanks to the pink color of the walls — Mexican Post's corporate identity. Despite the squalor of the premises, the department copes with its functions perfectly.

Package

We strongly advise you to pack the parcel in your own packaging, because cardboard boxes are not always sold in departments. Any cardboard box, including one left over after purchasing a product, can serve as packaging. In addition, the packaging can be soft but durable (bag or bag). We are sure that not far from the Mextpost branch you can find a stationery store (papeleria), where you can also purchase a box or bag. At the same time, buy some duct tape — scotch. Place all items in packaging and bring them to the post office.

The maximum possible weight of the parcel is — 20 kg, maximum length — 458 mm, height or width — 324 mm.

Do not seal the box! The postal employee has the right to check the contents.

Dispatch

Most often, the departments have two rooms: in one they accept parcels, in the other they issue them. To you at the door where it says Envios, that is, dispatch. Let us know that you want to send an international parcel. You will be given wrapping paper in which the parcel should be packed and secured with tape. In addition, please include your phone number and email.

If the postal officer has any doubts about the contents of the package, he will ask you to fill out Declaraciones for customs. There you need to briefly or even in one phrase indicate the contents of the parcel, say, cosas personales (personal belongings), the number of items and indicate the estimated value (Valores).

In the lower left corner, in the Nombre y firma de remitente column, write your first and last name and sign. The barcode from the form will be scanned, so the data about the parcel will enter the system, and you will be able to track its movement using the tracker.

We do not mention shipping costs here. The price is very individual, because it depends not only on the weight, but also on the dimensions of the package, and also on the estimated cost.
