Free internet throughout Mexico from the electric company CFE – How live in Mexico

The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) officially provides free access to the Internet throughout Mexico. The initiative is being implemented within the framework of the «Internet for All» program. and aims to reduce the digital divide, especially in remote regions of the country.

Signs with the CFE logo and a note indicating the presence of an Internet signal have already appeared on the streets of many localities in Mexico. Connection is possible from any mobile device, regardless of model or operator. Access is granted without a password, and use does not require registration or payment. To connect, just select CFE — in the Wi-Fi settings. the system will redirect you to a page where you should check the box that agrees with the usage criteria and click on the «Connect» button. It is a little inconvenient that connecting to a new access point does not occur automatically, and each time you must confirm your agreement with the terms of use.

The signal is distributed through CFE's own infrastructure, including fiber optic lines installed along power lines, and in addition through equipment placed on poles. Technologies include fiber, copper, 4G and satellite communications. This ensures that both urban areas and rural areas with unstable or non-existent internet are covered.

An interactive map is available for users on thisaddress, which displays all active hotspots throughout Mexico. The map allows you to search by address or geographic location, and is color-coded to indicate the type of CFE infrastructure connection to the network (satellite, 4G, fiber, or cable). The platform also shows the level of coverage in real time.

So, in Cancun, CFE has 411 connection points, they cover the entire central part of the city, say, Plaza las Americas, IMSS central hospital, Las Palapas park.

According to CFE, the largest number of connection points are installed in the capital of Mexico City — 10841, while the smallest — in the state of Baja California Sur, where there are only 303 of them. The agency plans to further expand the network, especially in regions with a low level of digital infrastructure.

In addition to free hotspots, CFE offers paid home Internet packages with varying speeds. These packages provide a modem and a fixed price comparable to market offers from private operators. In addition, combo services are offered, including analogue cable TV.
