A Mexican driver's license is handy for living and driving here, and in some states it is very easy to get. Here is how a foreigner gets a license in 2026.
Do you need a Mexican license
Tourists can drive on a foreign or international license. Residents should get a local one — it is easier to show to police and is needed for rentals, insurance and as ID.
Documents
- Passport and resident card (or, in some states, a passport).
- CURP.
- Proof of address (a CFE bill).
- Sometimes a foreign license and a medical/vision check.
Is an exam required
It depends on the state. In Quintana Roo (Cancun, Playa, Tulum) a theory and practical test is often NOT required — the license is issued on documents the same day. Mexico City and some states have introduced a theory test.
Cost and validity
| Validity | Approx. price |
|---|---|
| 3 years | ~$40–$70 |
| 5 years | ~$70–$110 |
Step by step
- Check your state requirements on the local government site.
- Gather documents and pay the fee.
- Visit the office (in Quintana Roo often without an appointment), take a test if required.
- Receive the license the same day.
