It is often easier for a foreigner to buy a local car than to import one. Here is how to buy a used car in Mexico safely in 2026.
Where to search
- MercadoLibre, Kavak, Seminuevos — the largest platforms.
- Official dealers (seminuevos) — pricier but with a warranty.
- Facebook groups and private listings — cheaper, higher risk.
Checks before buying
- REPUVE: check the VIN in the public registry — no theft, lien or issues.
- Documents: factura (invoice), tarjeta de circulación, paid tenencia/refrendo.
- No fines (multas) or overdue verificación.
- An inspection by an independent mechanic.
What the buyer needs
- CURP and proof of address.
- RFC (in some states) and ID (passport/resident card).
Ownership transfer
- Sign a sale contract and get the factura endorsed to you.
- Transfer the car to your name at the state transport office (cambio de propietario).
- Pay the fees and get new documents/plates if needed.
- Get insurance (third-party liability is mandatory).
Taxes and costs
