Many people perceive the unlimited driver's license that Mexico City issues as a document “for life.” Formally, they really do not have an expiration date. However, this does not mean that they cannot be lost. Regulatory Authority — Mexico City Mobility Secretariat (Semovi) — has the right to revoke a permanent driver's license for a number of serious violations.
The main thing is that after cancellation, perpetual rights cannot be restored or re-acquired. If you simultaneously have a license with an expiration date, they will also be canceled, and of all types at once: A/A2 (car) and A1 (motorcycle). But in some cases it is possible to find them again.
The main grounds for deprivation of a permanent driver's license include:
- Road accidents resulting in serious injury or death,
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs,
- Repeated violations under the «Conduce Sin Alcohol» program («Alcohol control»),
- Use of dedicated Metrobús lanes and other public transport,
- Damage to city infrastructure: traffic lights, road signs, poles, etc.,
- Systematic accumulation of unpaid fines,
- Aggressive or dangerous driving that endangers other road users.
Moreover, Semovi has the right to require a medical examination if there is a suspicion that the driver has diseases or conditions that affect the ability to drive safely. If the risk is confirmed, rights can also be revoked.
It can be said that a lifetime driver's license in Mexico City — This is a privilege for disciplined drivers, and not just an exemption from regularly obtaining new licenses.
