Tolls on Mexico's federal highways include insurance - Auto in Mexico

When paying tolls on federal toll roads managed by CAPUFE (Caminos y Puentes Federales), drivers automatically receive insurance coverage for the duration of their trip. Insurance is already included in the fare. But you need to understand that such insurance does not replace a full-fledged car insurance policy and is valid only in certain situations.

This insurance includes two types of coverage.

The first type of insurance coverage is related to accidents that occur due to the condition of the road infrastructure. For example, insurance may be applied if the accident occurred due to:

  • potholes on the road,
  • falling road barriers,
  • stones or other objects on the roadway,
  • exit of livestock or animals onto the track,
  • landslides,
  • other defects or obstacles on the road.

In such cases, insurance may cover:

  • repair of a damaged vehicle,
  • medical expenses of the driver and passengers,
  • funeral expenses,
  • damage to car windows.

Here it is necessary to clarify that when replacing or repairing glass, a deductible of 25% of the cost of repair is applied. The maximum limit is 116 UMA units. In 2026, this is approximately 13,100 pesos.

The second type of coverage concerns the user's liability to third parties and road infrastructure. Such insurance can help compensate for:

  • damage to other road users,
  • medical expenses of the victims,
  • funeral expenses,
  • damage from damage to road infrastructure.

However, there is a fundamental limitation here. CAPUFE insurance begins to operate only after the liability limit under the personal insurance policy of the person responsible for the accident has been exhausted. If you do not have your own insurance, a deductible of 10,000 pesos applies for passenger cars weighing up to 3.5 tons.

Insurance coverage does not cover repairs to the vehicle of a driver who is found to be at fault in an accident. In addition, the insurance is not valid if it is determined that the driver:

  • was intoxicated or under the influence of drugs,
  • significantly exceeded the set speed.

In such cases, all costs fall on the person responsible for the accident.

To benefit from coverage, it is important to retain proof of toll plaza payment or transponder stamp when paying automatically. In this case, the driver must have a valid driver's license and documents for the vehicle.

If an accident occurs, it is the proof of payment that proves that the vehicle was on the CAPUFE toll road and is eligible for insurance coverage.
