Authorities in the Mexican state of Sinaloa have approved the introduction of permanent motorcycle driver's licenses — a certificate that does not expire and does not require subsequent renewal. This will be the country's first permanent motorcycle driving license. Until this point, motorcycle licenses in all states were issued for a limited period only and were subject to regular renewal.
The legislative amendment to introduce a permanent certificate was unanimously supported by the State Congress. Government authorities are expected to announce the conditions for obtaining such rights in the coming days.
The process of acquiring rights will include a standard package of documents:
- ID card (INE or passport),
- confirmation of residential address,
- payment of state duty.
It is assumed that if the applicant already has a valid motorcycle license issued in the State of Sinaloa, the test will not be required, whereas the initial license test requires a driving theory test. In addition, it is planned to introduce a digital version of the license.
The final rules for acquiring rights will be announced after the publication of the administrative regulations.
The cost of a lifetime motorcycle driver's license is set at 18 UMA (Units of Measurement and Renewal), which equates to P2,112 for 2026. The authorities do not hide the fact that the issuance of perpetual rights can fill the state budget.
In Mexico City, you also have a permanent driver's license (type A), but this does not cover driving motorcycles. For motorcyclists in the capital, special license categories A1 (motorcycle only) or A2 (car and motorcycle) are required. These credentials have a validity period and require periodic renewal.
Although lifetime motorcycle licenses will only be issued in the state of Sinaloa, they will be valid throughout Mexico. Therefore, you do not need to obtain a separate license when traveling around the country or moving to another state.
