Russian airlines have suspended flights to Mexico

Russian airlines have stopped flying to Mexico, and all scheduled flights have been canceled starting February 28, 2022. There are two reasons for canceling flights: a ban on flights for Russian airlines through the territory of EU countries and the fear of aircraft being seized by lessors. Both reasons are related to the sanctions imposed by the United States and EU countries on Russia due to the war in Ukraine.

Until recently, there were 3 Russian air carriers from Russia to Mexico during the summer: Aeroflot — 5 times a week, Azur Air — 2 times a week, Nordwind — 3 times a month. All of them connected Moscow and the Mexican resort of Cancun. Aeroflot just started flying to Mexico in November last year.

Accordingly, all tours from Russia to Mexico, which were organized by tour operators Anex Tour and Pegas Pouristik on the wings of their airlines, have also been cancelled.

It is clear that direct flights from Russia to Mexico will not resume in the next few months. Of the routes that are currently available, routes via Istanbul (Turkish Airlines to Cancun and Mexico City), Dubai (Emirates to Mexico City) or EU countries (European airlines, from Paris, Amsterdam, Madrid, Warsaw, Zurich to Cancun or Mexico City) are suitable for flights to Mexico. You can fly to the EU again through Istanbul, as well as through Armenia or Azerbaijan. We will not claim that these routes will be consistently available, since, in particular, Turkey’s position towards the war may change, and planes will stop flying to Istanbul.

Direct flights from Moscow to Mexico on new routes over currently open countries are either economically infeasible or technically impossible.

In general, it is quite difficult to predict the development of the situation in the Russian air transportation market. If a country bans the flights of Russian aircraft, Russia also bans the flights of airlines from that country. An EU ban on leasing, insuring and maintaining Russian airline aircraft means most of the Russian passenger fleet will be forced out of the state or unable to fly. Thus, on February 27, a Boeing 777-300ER of Nordwind Airlines, performing a cargo flight from Khabarovsk to Mexico City, was detained in Mexico because the insurance company canceled the insurance.

The situation may become clearer (but not for the better) over the next 14 days, when the EU regulation must be implemented. After this, you will have to get to Mexico by any available route, but it is impossible to say now which routes will remain available.

Let us add that, in addition, all flights from Russia to the USA, Great Britain, the powers of Western and Eastern Europe, the Dominican Republic and Cuba have been cancelled. The list of canceled flights will increase in the coming days.
