Russia has replaced its ambassador to Mexico – Migration News

Nikolai Sofinsky has become the new Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Mexico. The decree on his appointment to this position was published on the website of the President of Russia. Sofinsky will also serve as part-time Russian Ambassador to Belize.

Nikolai Sofinsky is 58 years old. He has been in the diplomatic service since 1990. In 2020, he received the post of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Uruguay and a part-time observer to the committee of representatives of the Latin American Integration Association. In 2011 — In 2015, Sofinsky was Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Peru, and later worked as Deputy Director of the Latin American Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, replacing Coronelli in this position.

The previous Russian Ambassador to Mexico, Viktor Coronelli, has been appointed to the post of Ambassador to Cuba and the Bahamas. Coronelli has served as Ambassador to Mexico since June 2018, and before that he was Russian Ambassador to Argentina for almost 7 years.

Coronelli became widely known after he helped solve the “cocaine case” together with Russian and Argentine intelligence services while serving as ambassador to Argentina. Then Argentine law enforcement agencies discovered 12 suitcases with 389 kg of cocaine on the territory of the Russian embassy in Buenos Aires.
