Mexico has the right to open an embassy in Astana in 2023. The official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Aibek Smadiyarov, told reporters about this.
On January 12-13, 2023, the 34th annual meeting of Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard with the diplomatic corps took place in Mexico City. «In his speech, Marcelo Ebrard, speaking about the tasks for the current year, officially announced that in 2023 Mexico will open five new embassies, including in Kazakhstan», — said a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan. At the same time, Marcelo Ebrard’s statement itself does not contain any details about the opening of an embassy in Astana.
At the moment, Mexico does not have diplomatic representation in Kazakhstan. Mexico's interests in Kazakhstan are represented by the state embassy in Ankara, Türkiye. At the same time, Kazakhstan has an embassy and consular section in Mexico City. After the dismissal of Andrian Yelemesov from the post of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Kazakhstan to Mexico in 2020, the post of head of the Kazakh diplomatic mission remains vacant, his duties are performed by the charge d'affaires.
Mexican citizens do not need a visa to visit Kazakhstan for up to 30 days. At the same time, they are able to stay in Kazakhstan without a visa for a total of no more than 90 days for each 180-day period.
Citizens of Kazakhstan require a visa to visit Mexico. To obtain it, Kazakhstanis are required to contact the country's consulate in Istanbul. The opening of the Mexican embassy in Astana could mean that citizens of Kazakhstan are able to obtain a Mexican visa without leaving the country. It is not yet known when they will have such an option.
