Mexico City launches new Metrobús route to the airport

A new route of the Metrobús system has launched in the Mexican capital, directly connecting the central Paseo de la Reforma avenue with the two terminals of Mexico City's Benito Juarez International Airport (AICM). The project became part of the preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and is also aimed at guests of countries.

The new route, called Quetzalcóatl, is the second Metrobus route providing direct connections to the airport. Previously, the only line to the airport departed from San Lázaro station, next to the TAPO bus terminal and a transfer to metro lines 1 and B, from where buses went to terminals 1 and 2. Now passengers have a direct route from the central part of the city.

The Quetzalcóatl route starts at Amajac station, located a few steps from the Plaza de la República and the Angel of Independence. The route runs along a dedicated Metrobus lane, avoiding traffic jams even during peak hours. The line has 19 stops, passing through key areas of the historic center including Juarez, Isabel la Catolica, Pino Suarez, La Merced and San Lazaro, before arriving at both AICM terminals.

There are 19 electric buses on the route, each of which is designed to carry up to 70 passengers. Transport is easy to recognize by electronic signs with the designation «Aeropuerto T1/T2» and decorative images of the Quetzalcoatl snake and a soccer ball on the side windows, which emphasizes the connection of the project with the upcoming world championship.

Buses run daily from approximately 4:30 am until midnight. Travel time — about an hour. The new route costs 30 pesos, which is higher than the standard Metrobus fare of 6 pesos on other lines. You can pay for travel using an integrated transport card, a contactless bank card, a smartphone with NFC or a smart watch. For children under five years of age, people with disabilities and holders of discount cards, the trip remains free of charge.

However, there are still several ways to get to the airport. In addition to the Metrobus lines, the city metro with connections to ground transport is available, as well as all kinds of city and suburban bus routes. Taxis and services like Uber also remain one of the most popular options, especially when traveling with luggage or at night.
