Tequila — the most famous Mexican alcoholic drink, promoted to the world market for more than 40 years. Tequila is produced by distilling the fermented juice of one type of agave — tequila, or blue. Mexico is the only producer of tequila in the world. The principle of compliance with the geography of production is strictly observed; tequila is allowed to be produced in only 5 states of the country.
Tequila is considered a premium drink, and the longer the aging period, the higher the price. Tequila extra añejo («very old»), aged in barrels for 3 years, most valuable. There are over 200 distilleries in Mexico producing over 1,500 brands of tequila, with new brands emerging every year. Mexico exports tequila to more than 120 countries, but more than 80% of exports come from one country — USA. The annual increase in the production and export of tequila from Mexico is 6-10%, and this is the fastest growing world market after whiskey.
Although in Mexico they prefer to consume tequila in its pure form, abroad the use of tequila in all kinds of cocktails is becoming more and more widespread. The most famous tequila-based drinks are Margarita, Paloma, Tequila Sunrise. and «Tequila boom».
