Working in Mexico as a foreigner is possible but requires legal status with work rights. Here is how to get a work visa and permit in 2026.
Path 1. Employer-sponsored work visa
The most common route: a Mexican employer files an offer for you through INM. After approval you get a visa at the consulate, enter, and complete the canje. The employer must be registered to hire foreigners (constancia de empleador).
Steps
- The employer files your employment request with INM.
- After approval you book the consulate and get the visa.
- You enter Mexico and complete the canje at INM within 30 days.
- You receive a resident card with work rights.
Path 2. Add work rights to existing residency
If you already have temporary residency by income, you can add a work permit (permiso para trabajar) by filing with INM together with a job offer.
Path 3. Freelance and remote work
Working for foreign clients from Mexico generally requires no local permit. To formalize income you get an RFC and the RESICO regime (1–2.5%). More in our business and taxes section.
