Temporary residency (Residente Temporal) is first issued for 1 year, then renewed. You cannot miss the deadline — it risks losing your status. Here is how to renew residency in 2026.
When to renew
You must file for renewal before your current card expires, usually 30 days ahead. Missing it means starting the process over from abroad. The first residency is 1 year; renewal is possible for 1, 2 or 3 years (up to 4 years total), then a switch to permanent.
Documents
- Valid resident card.
- Application form (formato) and fee payment.
- Current photos to spec.
- Proof of address (a CFE bill).
- Sometimes status proof (for family/work renewals).
Step by step
- Complete the application on the INM portal and book an appointment.
- Pay the fee at a bank.
- Attend the INM office with documents and give biometrics.
- Wait for the new card (usually 2–4 weeks).

Switch to permanent
