Comparison of Mexico Work Visa and Economic Wealth Visa

Comparison of Mexico work visa and economic solvency visa

Work visa and resident visa based on economic viability — the two most popular visas through which it is easiest to obtain residency status in Mexico. Visas are issued only by consulates; they confirm that their holder has grounds for obtaining a residence permit, can freely enter Mexico and receive a resident card. These visas are the simplest because to obtain other visas that give the right to a residence permit in Mexico, much more serious reasons are required, which are not available to everyone. It cannot be said that one of these two visas is easier to prepare, and another is more difficult — Both visas are quite easy to obtain, if on other words grounds. There is an invitation from a Mexican employer — get a work visa. High income or sufficient savings that you can prove, — get a visa based on economic solvency. There is neither one nor the other — look for other resolutions.

We want to compare the basic intricacies of these two visas and their associated residence permits. This will allow you to choose which visa suits you best.

Reasons for purchasing

  • Work Visa: A visa authorization issued by the Mexican Immigration Service based on an invitation to work from a Mexican company.

The employer issues a permit to issue a visa based on an invitation to work and then sends it to the visa recipient. The employer must meet certain criteria.

  • Visa based on wealth:
    • income of at least $4400 per month (2026) for the last 6 months or
    • Bank account balance of at least $74,000 in the last 12 months.

The source of income and payment of taxes must be confirmed. It is also better to have confirmation of the source of money in the account.

Consulate

  • Work visa: Mexican consulate in any country in the world.

Only some consulates (especially in the EU) are able to refuse to accept papers without residence in that country.

  • Wealth Visa: Diplomatic representation only by country of citizenship or income/account/residence.

The requirements for choosing a consulate are quite strict. There are additional, from our point of view, excessive standards for paperwork when filing in a country other than the country of income or account.

Documentation for visa

  • Work visa: the visa package is prepared by the employer.
  • Visa based on wealth: the documentation package is prepared by the visa recipient.

The set of documents required for a visa depends on a number of factors. Income documentation must show the source, receipts and payment of taxes. For savings, you need an account statement and (not always) documents confirming the source.

Subtleties of an interview at the consulate

In both cases, the interview is only in Spanish or English.

  • Work visa: the main questions relate to future work. Bringing an interpreter is not recommended.
  • Visa based on wealth: basic questions relate to the documents provided. If there are no questions about the documents, the interview is not conducted. It is possible to bring a translator.

Depending on your suitability, the consular department may decide to issue a visa before your visit.

Visa issuance deadlines

For both visas, the issuance period depends on the consulate. Typically, a visa is issued on the day of the visit. In addition, you should take into account the queue for a visit, which at different consulates can range from 1 day to several weeks.

Visa Features

The validity period of both visas is — 180 days during which you must enter Mexico. You are only allowed to enter once. The visa cannot be extended.

When entering, you need to pay attention that at passport control the entry is issued as Canje, that is, for the purpose of exchanging a visa for a resident card.

Purchasing a resident card

For both visas, within 30 days after entering Mexico, you must contact the migration service and initiate an exchange of the visa for a resident card. The period for issuing a card depends on the migration service office and can take up to several days.

Renewal of a resident card

A temporary resident card for both visas is always issued for 1 year for the first time, then extended to the 4th year. After the 4th year, a permanent resident card is issued, without additional conditions. Time limit before acquiring citizenship — 5 years.

  • Work visa: extended for 1, 2 or 3 years, based on the terms of the contract with the employer.

The initiator of the extension is the employer. Confirmation from the employer is required for renewal.

  • Visa based on wealth: extended for 1, 2 or 3 years, based on the wishes of the resident.

No confirmation is required for renewal; economic viability does not need to be re-confirmed.

Work permit

  • Work visa: gives permission to work.
  • Wealth-based visa: does not provide work permission.

In order to obtain a work permit in addition to a residence permit based on economic viability, you need to find an employer or register with the Tax Administration Service (SAT) as a self-employed entrepreneur. A work permit is issued by a separate request to the migration service.

Absence in Mexico

After receiving a residence permit, in both cases you are allowed to be absent from Mexico within the validity period of the resident card. You must travel to Mexico to renew your card. Failure to renew your card on time means losing your residency status in Mexico.
