Mexico has only a few types of entry visas. One of them — resident visa. This is essentially an immigrant visa. It confirms that its holder has all the grounds to obtain a residence permit in Mexico. The grounds for obtaining a resident visa can be different, but there are not many of them: based on family ties (some call it “family reunification”), invitation to work (work visa), study (student visa), economic solvency (income, savings, property ownership or shares in a public company»). There are also rarer reasons.
This visa looks exactly the same as a simple (travel) visa, but it is marked with «temporary residence» or «permanent residence», which indicates that the visa holder is already a resident of Mexico without 5 minutes.
In this post, we will answer basic questions about the Mexican resident visa.
Where to obtain a resident visa?Mexico issues all visas only at foreign consulates. Family ties visas, work visas and student visas can be obtained at any Mexican consulate, without reference to the country of one’s citizenship. A visa based on economic solvency is issued only at the consulate of the country of one’s citizenship or income/residence; other consulates may refuse — this is our own practice.
A separate publication is devoted to each of the grounds for acquiring a resident visa (residence permit in Mexico) on our website (these are answers to the question «how to obtain a resident visa»). If you can prepare a residence permit based on family ties immediately in Mexico, and it is not necessary to purchase a visa for this, then a residence permit based on economic solvency can only be prepared after obtaining a resident visa at the consulate. Moreover, you can prepare a residence permit for work or study only after purchasing a visa, unless you already have a visitor card for humanitarian reasons (it is issued upon a request for refugee status).
Citizens of which countries are able to obtain a resident visa?Any countries. It is not citizenship that matters, but compliance with the criteria for obtaining a visa. However, it is important to take into account that in order to obtain a resident visa, you may need a visa to the country where the Mexican consulate of your choice is located. Then choose a diplomatic mission in another country where you do not need a visa.
Can a resident visa be refused?Yes, if the consul considers that you do not meet the criteria for a visa in each particular case. In particular, you provided an incomplete set of documentation or filled out some of the paperwork incorrectly, did not meet the financial criteria, or could not confirm the source of income. In our opinion, the easiest way to get a visa is through family ties, the hardest thing is — according to economic viability.
There are cases when the migration system, based on your data, issues a so-called «alert» (anxiety). This is not always a ban on entry into Mexico, but it is a warning to immigration officials. In particular, if you receive a refusal when applying for an electronic permit, but if you change one letter in your first or last name, there will be no refusal, which means that the migration system issues an “alert” based on your data. Then, obtaining a resident visa may also be denied, even if this «alert» wrong.
What are the nuances of a resident visa? When receiving a visa you need to submit fingerprints. Visa fee — US$56 (2026). Validity period — 180 days during which you must enter Mexico, even on the last day of your visa validity. You can enter only once, by any means of transport across any border. If you have a work visa and your employer is based in Cancun, you can still fly into any Mexican airport. After entering within 30 days, you should contact the migration service and exchange your visa for a resident card. Have not entered Mexico within 180 days or have not contacted the immigration service within 30 days of entry — the visa expires. You cannot extend your visa, but you are allowed to get a new one.
Is it possible to purchase a resident visa, but not come to Mexico to obtain a residence permit? No, you can't. Visa application — This is not yet a residence permit registration. The visa can be exchanged for a resident card only in Mexico.
Even if you received a resident visa, entered Mexico with it, but did not apply for a resident card, you may be denied subsequent visa applications. Moreover, they will refuse to extend your stay in Mexico.
What are the rules for entering Mexico with a resident visa?Entry is as hassle-free as if you were moving in as a resident. Purpose of coming to Mexico — registration of a residence permit. A return ticket is not needed, hotel reservations and proof of financial solvency are also not needed. We suggest that when going through passport control you have all the same documents with which you received your visa. We do not know of a single case of refusal to enter Mexico on a properly issued resident visa, even to citizens of those countries who are usually denied entry to Mexico as a traveler (Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, etc.). They can refuse if the data on the visa and the data in the passport do not match, therefore the visa must be carefully checked at the consulate immediately after receipt.
You must enter Mexico not as a guest of the country, but as a resident. If you fill out the FMM migration form yourself, check the «other/otro» in the «Purpose of visit» block. Show the immigration officer your visa and make sure that he writes the word Canje on the immigration form or entry stamp in your passport, this is essential.
The entry criteria for a temporary resident visa and a permanent resident visa are no different.
Are the entry standards the same for family members of a resident visa holder? Most often, family members do not receive their own visas, but enter Mexico with the visa holder as visitors. Once the visa holder exchanges it for a resident card, they apply for residency status based on family ties. It's easier that way. But such a scheme means that upon entry they are required to comply with all the formalities provided for the entry of travelers: have a return ticket, hotel reservation, etc. However, if a family member has confirmation of a family connection with the visa holder (most often, a marriage or birth certificate), this will be enough for a smooth entry with him into Mexico without a return ticket. Don’t be afraid to tell the migration officer that you came to Mexico to apply for residency status with your spouse or child. Mexico honors family ties and does not allow family separation.
Another thing — airlines. They may require a family member to provide a return ticket. This issue can be resolved by choosing the right route and airline.
If you do not want to buy a return ticket, obtain a family ties resident visa at the same time as your main visa recipient. But it should be understood that in some cases this will make it difficult for them to obtain a visa; we talked about something similar. The most reliable option — act according to the following scheme: the head of the family receives a resident visa, enters Mexico using it and issues a resident card. After this, family members apply to the consular department, receive their visas based on family ties with the head of the family and enter Mexico without any problems. The family will unite in Mexico. There are practically no refusals to issue resident visas to family members.
Can children also get a resident visa?Minor children can only obtain a resident visa as family members of the primary visa recipient. This will require a financial guarantee from the parent, but it is relatively small — The account should contain approximately US$1464 for each child. When obtaining a visa, the presence of children at the consulate is mandatory, even very young ones.
In general, a family ties resident visa always requires a financial guarantee, except in cases where a relative — citizen of Mexico. If at least one family member has grounds for obtaining a resident visa, in other words, for acquiring a residence permit in Mexico, all other family members, including grandparents, have the right to acquire a residence permit.
