The final step of naturalization is the Mexican citizenship exam. It tests Spanish language and basic knowledge of the country history, geography and culture. Here is what is asked and how to prepare in 2026.
What the exam covers
- Spanish language: an oral interview, reading and comprehension at a basic conversational level.
- History and culture: questions on key events, symbols and geography of Mexico.

Who is exempt
- Applicants over 60 years old.
- Children under 18 (naturalizing through parents).
- In some cases, on health grounds.
- Those born in Latin America or the Iberian Peninsula may get concessions.
How to prepare
The SRE (Foreign Ministry) publishes official guías with questions and answers. Learning the standard questions and brushing up conversational Spanish is enough. The exam is not hard with basic preparation, and most people pass on the first try.
