How to issue a private letter of invitation to Mexico – Migration Rules

One of the conditions for successfully passing immigration control when entering Mexico is confirmation of the purpose of your trip. Just from reply «tourism» sometimes it's not enough. You must have either a guest government voucher, or a hotel reservation, or even a planned itinerary for traveling around the country. And there may also be a letter of invitation from a private person permanently residing in Mexico. For example, you have the opportunity to come to visit a friend or relative.

Such an invitation letter — This is not at all the same as what many powers require when obtaining a visa for a private visit. Mexico's migration legislation does not define such a document at all, and there are no clear requirements for issuing invitations from individuals. However, in practice, such letters are quite successfully accepted by migration service officers as confirmation of the purpose of the trip to Mexico. An invitation can be issued either from a citizen or from a resident of Mexico. It is written in free form; it does not need to be certified anywhere.

From some data that must be indicated in such a letter:

  • who is inviting, his personal data and contacts,
  • who he invites, his personal data and contacts,
  • for how long does he invite?
  • where the invitee will live (the address will not be checked),
  • what is the relationship between the parties (friend, relative, business partner, etc.)

We indicated that the residential address would not be checked. On the Internet, you can read the tips attached live to the letter of the lease agreement and even the utility bill to confirm this address. It is believed that the inviter is able to confirm his intentions to provide accommodation for a foreign guest, and the guest can do without the mandatory reservation from a hotel or Airbnb. It looks like «the more pieces of paper, the better». In fact, representatives of the migration service will never check with papers what kind of relationship the inviting person has with this housing. If they need it, they will call him to confirm.

In addition, there is no need to confirm with documents the relationship between the inviter and the person being invited. No one will check the names in the invitation letter and birth certificates.

It is advisable (but not mandatory) to indicate what responsibility a resident of Mexico will bear for a foreigner during the latter’s stay in the country.

For the airline, the letter of invitation is not a document, it does not mean anything and does not in any way influence its decision to allow you to board. If the airline requires that the passenger have an accommodation reservation in Mexico (Turkish Airlines), you cannot replace it with the inviter's commitment to accommodate him in the invitation letter.

When going through passport control at the entrance to Mexico, present your invitation letter to the migration officer. The officer can contact the inviting party by phone or check her identity using the data specified in the letter. This must be taken into account and always indicate only reliable data.

They may not ask for confirmation of the purpose of coming to Mexico, and in most cases this is what happens. But it's worth having insurance.

If the migration officer at the entrance to Mexico did not react in any way to the invitation letter, did not call the person indicated in the letter as the inviting party, but immediately allowed you entry or from said, this means that the information he already had about you was enough for him to make a decision.

Original or photocopy? It does not matter at all whether you present the original invitation letter or a scanned copy to passport control in Mexico. The content of this document and especially — indication of details and contacts of the receiving party. It is important that the person who invited you is available by phone during your arrival and can confirm the facts stated in the letter. It is important that you can tell who he is to you, where you met him and for what reason he invited you to Mexico. There may be other questions, for example, who does he work for, does he have a family, etc. In any circumstances, the decision whether to accept a letter of invitation as grounds for entry into Mexico rests with the passport control officer upon arrival.

How to deliver a letter to someone who is invited? Yes, how come! The easiest way to from is like this:

  • Tfrom who invites:
    • prints or writes from hand test invitations,
    • signs,
    • scans,
    • fromsends by email or messenger to the person he invites,
  • Guest:
    • prints the received file,
    • shows the printout at passport control as justification for the purpose of the trip to Mexico.
