Cozumel Island — the largest island of Mexico in the Caribbean and one of the most visited places in the state of Quintana Roo. In contrast to the mass tourism-oriented mainland Mayan Riviera, Cozumel has historically developed as a port and diving center rather than as a nightlife resort. For this reason, a trip here is rather a change of pace: less giant spruces, more nature, archeology and the sea.
Main route to Cozumel — ferry from Playa del Carmen. Starting point — ferry terminal at Fundadores Park, transportation is carried out by Ultramar and Winjet. Tickets can be purchased directly at the port, at kiosks in Playa del Carmen or online. The first flight is usually around 7:00-8:00 am, and it is better to arrive about 30 minutes in advance. You can buy a return ticket immediately, but you don’t have to be tied to a specific flight; you can return on any available ferry. Distance between mainland and island — about 19 km, travel time is 30-45 minutes, depending on the weather and type of vessel. Flights run every 1-2 hours from early morning until evening. If the sea is calm, this is an ordinary transport trip, not an excursion.
From the mainland side, the journey from Cancúna to the pier takes about an hour. There is an international airport on the island itself, but most tourists prefer the ferry, which is faster and cheaper.
How to get to Cozumel yourself, we told in this publications.
Cozumel— one of the largest cruise ports in the Caribbean. Many airliners come here every year, which explains the developed infrastructure on the west coast. However, long before the cruise industry, the island was an important point on Mayan sea routes: there were shrines where women made pilgrimages.
The modern city of San Miguel de Cozumel grew up around the old port, maintaining a layout oriented towards the sea rather than towards the guest state quarters. By and large, there is nothing to see in the city itself.
Taxis in Cozumel are expensive and public transport is almost non-existent. The best option — rent a compact car, buggy or jeep, scooter, or golf cart. Rental offices are located right next to the ferry pier. Documents are standard: driver's license and bank card.
First stop — archaeological zone of San Gervasio. It is better to go here early in the day: less heat, fewer excursion groups from cruise ships. Osmfromr takes about 45-60 minutes. A visit requires comfortable shoes: the area is partially covered with limestone stones and tree roots, and the paths are uneven. There is no water or shops, take everything in advance.

San Gervasio is located in the center of the island, about 20 minutes drive from the coast. This is not a «pyramid for the sake of ffromo», but a historical Mayan pilgrimage site dedicated to the goddess Ixchel — patroness of fertility, medicine and birth.
Cozumel was a place of pilgrimage for the Maya, comparable in importance to major mainland centers. Women arrived here by sea to bring gifts and receive blessings. Archaeologists have discovered a sacbe network — stone roads connecting the shrines, as well as administrative platforms, which indicates limited access to the religious place.
After the ruins, it makes sense not to return to the city, but to continue the path to the east. The road passes through a sparsely populated part of the island, here you can see the real Cozumel. The surf here is strong and swimming is not allowed everywhere. There are practically no fir trees and many blue spots right next to the road. This is the best site for understanding the geography of the island.
Allow about an hour for stops, since this is not a beach vacation, but just stops for exploring the surrounding area.
Home Natural Area of Cozumel — ecopark Punta Sur on the southern part of the island. It occupies about 1000 hectares. This is not just a beach, but a protected area with lagoons, mangroves and a dune system.
Here it is allowed:
- climb Mayk Selarain, used since the 19th century for navigation,
- see crocodiles in their natural environment in the Columbia Lagoon,
- observe the seasonal migrations of sea turtles and birds,
- walk through the archaeological remains of small coastal Mayan shrines,
- frombreathe on one of the few beaches with calm water.
The park limits the number of visitors, which is why there are noticeably fewer people here than on the island's popular beaches. The visit usually takes 1.5-2 hours. The territory is large, but movement inside is possible by car.
After the natural park, it is better to move to the west of the island, where there is a calm Caribbean Sea without waves. There is clear water here due to the proximity of the reef, comfortable entrances for snorkeling, and all the infrastructure (showers, cafes, mask rental). If time is short, choose a place with access directly from the shore, it is not necessary to take a boat excursion.
Snorkeling and diving — the main wealth of Cozumel. Cozumel is best known for its underwater world, due to its location along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second largest coral system in the world. Thanks to sea currents, the water here is especially clear, and visibility often exceeds 30 meters.
Almost all sea excursions are organized according to the principle of «drift diving» — drift diving, where divers or snorkelers slowly move along a reef without the need to actively swim. This makes Cozumel accessible even to beginners.
From the shore it is possible to see corals and tropical fish, but the full acquaintance with the reef occurs during boat trips to remote areas.

Equipped beaches with a «day pass» infrastructure are concentrated on the western coast. The most famous:
- Paradise Beach Club
- Mr. Sanchos Beach Club
- Buccanos Grill & Beach Club
The price of a visit usually includes an entrance ticket with access to sun loungers, swimming pools, showers, restaurants and equipment rental. This is a practical option for those who come for one day and do not want to waste time searching for public beaches, of which there are few on the island due to the coral line.
In addition, it is possible to visit the eastern («outer») side of the island. But it differs sharply from Western. There is a covered sea and strong waves, for this reason there are almost no swimming areas. The road passes through areas of rainforest and limestone plains. Along the way there are small coastal restaurants that have been in business for decades for fishermen and local residents. This part of the island gives a glimpse of what Cozumel was like before the tourist boom of the 1970s.
It is advisable to return to the city an hour before the return ferry flight. The island is safe, but the roads are narrow. In the evening, queues of cruise ship passengers form, and traffic on the island is slow — one main road. Rented vehicles must be returned in advance.
The relocation itself takes the same 30-40 minutes, but after sunset the sea often becomes more wavy — This is a normal feature of the strait.
When traveling to Cozumel, take cash, since many places on the island accept cards. Sun protection is mandatory; there is little shade even in the jungle. Don’t plan to visit many locations at once; after all, there are long distances on the island.
Cozumel's economy is based on three sources: cruises, diving and day visits from the mainland. Therefore, the format of travel here from Cancúna or Playa del Carmen is different: less resort, more independent exploration. Cozumel is often chosen not for the destination, but for the route: ferry, road around the island, Mayan ruins, reef and return to the mainland the same day.
