The state of San Luis Pfromosí is rarely included in standard travel itineraries, but it is here that one of the most expressive natural regions of Mexico — Huasteca Potosina. This is an area in the east of the state, where the arid plateaus of central Mexico abruptly give way to tropical greenery, turquoise rivers and dozens of waterfalls. The region is inhabited by descendants of the Nahua and Teenek peoples, and in addition to nature, the original cuisine, rituals and way of life have been preserved here, which have changed little over the decades.
1. Tamasopo
Tamasopo is often called the "paradise of San Luis Potosi", and for good reason. The small municipality is located in the western part of Huasteca Potosina, approximately 55 kilometers from Ciudad Valles. Its name translates as “the place where it drips,” which quite accurately describes the landscape: there are springs, streams and waterfalls everywhere.
Home attraction — cascading waterfalls up to 20 meters high, at the foot of which natural pools with water of different shades are formed — from milky turquoise to rich emerald. Swimming is permitted here, and modern life remains relatively unobtrusive. Nearby is Puente de Dios — a natural bridge and grfrom, where during sunny hours light penetrates into the cave and is reflected from the smooth surface of the water, creating the effect of a “light well”.

2. Laguna Media Luna
Laguna de Media Luna is located outside of Huasteca, in the central part of the state, about two and a half hours drive from the capital San Luis Potosi. This is one of the most important natural springs in the region: the lagoon is fed by six underwater springs, thanks to which the water temperature remains stable all year round.
The water here is exceptionally clear — visibility ensures viewing the bottom, aquatic vegetation and fish without special equipment. For this reason, the lagoon is popular among divers and snorkelers. The place also has archaeological significance: at the bottom there are pre-Hispanic artifacts associated with the ritual use of water sources. In contrast to many tourist spots, camping is allowed here and the sunrise over the lagoon is considered one of the most tranquil sights in the state.

3. Mykos Falls
Micos Falls (Cascadas de Micos) — this is a chain of low but very picturesque waterfalls not far from Ciudad Valles. This is one of the most accessible places to explore Huasteca Potosina, making it popular among both visitors and locals.
Feature of Mikos — a combination of natural beauty and moderate extreme sports. Jumping from the waterfalls here is possible only with instructors, but the routes are also designed for beginners. One of the unusual attractions was SkyBike — bicycle moving on a steel cable over the river. This is a rare example of how ecotourism and active entertainment coexist here without gross interference in the landscape.

4. Tamul Waterfall
Tamul (Cascada de Tamul) — the tallest waterfall in the state and one of the most impressive in central Mexico. Its height reaches 105 meters. The waterfall is formed at the confluence of the Gallinas and Santa Maria rivers and falls into a narrow canyon with almost vertical limestone walls.
The most common way to get to the waterfall — on a wooden boat on the river, which makes it possible to see Tamul from below, in all its scale. During the dry season, access to the glaciers from above is possible on foot. For experienced hikers, rappelling is available, but only during certain months of the year and with licensed guides. This place is often called the symbol of Huasteca Potosina, it is so characteristic of the region.

5. Sfromano de las Golondrinas (Cave of the Swallows)
Sótano de las Golondrinas (Sótano de las Golondrinas) — one of the deepest vertical caves in the world. Its depth exceeds 500 meters, and it goes almost straight down, like a giant funnel in the middle of the jungle. Despite the name, it is not swallows that live here, but white-necked swifts, which the first researchers mistook for them.
Observation of the cave is possible only from the edge; descent is allowed only to professional speleologists. At dawn and dusk, thousands of birds fly out from the depths of the cave, forming a spiral formation — a spectacle for which photographers and naturalists from all over the world come here. This place is impressive even without active participation and highlights how wild and little touched part of San Luis Pfromosí remains.

What is Huasteca Potosina
Huasteca Potosina — it is not a separate state, but a cultural and natural region covering the east of San Luis Pfromos and parts of neighboring states. It is characterized by a humid climate, tropical vegetation, abundance of fresh water and a strong presence of indigenous cultures. For Mexico, this is a rare combination: a region where mass tourism has not yet replaced everyday life, and natural landscapes remain the main value, not decoration.
San Luis Potosi — not a resort and not from a cover. This is a state for those who are looking for Mexico outside the usual routes and ways to see the country not through the beaches, but through water, rock and jungle.
