Where did this mysterious word come from and why did it so quickly enter the vocabulary of Latin Americans?

Legends and myths: who are gringos?

There are many theories about the origin of the word gringo, and some of them are so colorful that they seem true, even if they are not. One of the most popular legends says that the word appeared during the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848. According to rumors, Mexicans called US Army soldiers "gringos" because of their green shape. «Green go home!» — the Mexicans allegedly shouted, urging the soldiers to return to America. Of course, the story sounds impressive, but... alas, it is not confirmed by historians.

More than one popular version associates the word with the green uniforms of cowboys or settlers who crossed the border to the south. But again, this is more folklore than truth.

Historians claim that the word «gringo» appeared long before all the wars, and its origin is more banal, but no less fascinating. The roots go back to the Spanish language of the 18th century. In ancient Spanish dictionaries, the word gringo was described as “a foreigner speaking an unknown language.” This is a derivative from the word griego — «Greek». Remember the phrase «This is for me— like Greek»? In Spanish there is an equivalent — hablar en griego («speak Greek»), which means «speak incomprehensibly». Gradually, foreigners whose language seemed unintelligible to the Spaniards began to be called gringos.

When the Spaniards set out to colonize America, they brought this word with them. Here it took root as a vivid and figurative way to designate foreigners, especially those who spoke English or simply looked «different».
