La Noche Blanca in Mexican Merida – Mexican Culture

La Noche Blanca is a cultural event held twice a year in the city of Merida, the capital of the Mexican state of Yucatan. This is a kind of night from indoor museums, but in an expanded format: over the course of one evening, and sometimes until late at night, a number of cultural events take place in Merida, and most of them are free.

La Noche Blanca («White Night») is usually held twice a year - in May/June and in November, each year on a different date. For example, in 2025 the event will take place on June 13-14 and November 29-30. It starts in the evening and lasts until late at night, up to 2–3 hours. Attendance reaches 60–80 thousand people per night.

«El arte te encuentra» - «art finds you itself» - this is the motto of «White Night». It was conceived as a democratization of culture: to go beyond the elite halls and make access to art as private as possible. The city atmosphere on this night is truly special: theatrical performances take place right on the sidewalks, string quartets play in the arches of colonial buildings, artists paint in real time in shop windows, and dancers perform in public gardens and cafes. More than 130 sites throughout the city are involved, including the center, neighborhoods and suburban areas.

Museums and galleries are open until late at night and are closed free of charge. In the central part of the city, performances, projections, exhibitions, and events are organized with the participation of Mexican and international artists. There are street fairs and art markets where artists and artisans present their works. Many restaurants, cafes and bars offer special menus, live music or late closing times.

If you're in Merida during La Noche Blanca, you shouldn't miss it - it's one of the best ways to see the city in all its cultural beauty. La Noche Blanca transforms all of central Merida into a theater and art playground. The streets are pedestrian and closed to cars. Churches, markets, colonnaded buildings become the background or stage. Spaces that are usually closed - such as the courtyards of old mansions - are closed at night. This is a chance to see the city anew, in special lighting, sound, and energy.
